Rathergate Explodes
No, on second thought, that reminds me of Daffy Duck repeatedly getting his bill shot to the other side of is head. CBS blowing itself up with last night’s 60 Minutes II fourfold rehashing of the “Bush is a deserter” smear based upon amateurly forged documents attributed to a dead man sounds like a road-runner cartoon.
This sloppy, frantically whipped together anti-Bush counterattack was taken apart so rapidly by the blogosphere today that even if I hadn’t been swamped by my “day job,” I would have been hard-pressed to keep up with it. Now, instead of the President being besieged, it’s Clinton Broadcasting System which is having its spokespeople harried and its phone banks melted. If the Internet can administer such a thunderous ass-kicking to Big Media this, well, “swiftly,” maybe my oft-expressed opinion that Kerry would have been better off ignoring the Swiftboat Vets was off-base.
I’m not going to even try to get into the details. The KerrySpot, Hugh Hewitt, Captain's Quarters; LittleGreenFootballs, IpseDixit, and the first to the story, Powerline, have them in excruciating detail.
And, even more interestingly, other arms of Big Media are joining the party, like ABC News and the Washington Post – neither of which, you’ll note, are NBC. Purely an act of professional self-preservation? Of course. But a harbinger, I think, of what is soon to come as John Kerry’s viability continues to evaporate.
The question being most asked is where CBS got those forged docs. Anybody want to bet that if this can be traced back far enough, it was the Clinton machine that set this caper in motion to either embarrass Kerry and/or make it that much more difficult to credibly “get” George W. Bush?
