Socialism Uber Alles

Is this, quoted by the Washington Post, what Kerry thought Clinton meant when he told the Boston Balker to stop talking about Vietnam and start focusing “like a laser beam” on domestic issues?

“And today even the Pentagon has admitted this very reality," Kerry said, "that entire regions of Iraq are controlled by insurgents and terrorists. I call this course a catastrophic course that has cost us $200 billion because we went it alone, and we've paid an even more unbearable price in young American lives and the risks our soldiers take."

"That's $200 billion that we're not investing in education and health care, job creation here at home; $200 billion for going it alone in Iraq."

So he’s admitting that he thinks growing government at home is more important than defending the country abroad?

Well, now, that’s a rare moment of honest clarity.

It’ll make watching him try to square this with his bleating about Bush’s “fiscal irresponsibility” that much more entertaining.

Heck, it’ll make watching him try to square this with his own comments fun to watch:

NBC News, Meet the Press, August 31, 2003

MR. RUSSERT: Do you believe that we should reduce funding that we are now providing for the operation in Iraq?

SENATOR KERRY: No. I think we should increase it.

MR. RUSSERT: Increase funding?

SENATOR KERRY: Yes.

MR. RUSSERT: By how much?

SENATOR KERRY: By whatever number of billions of dollars it takes to win. It is critical that the United States of America be successful in Iraq, Tim. [my emphasis]

Is it any wonder that the most salient portion of President Bush’s acceptance speech last week may have been, “You all know where I stand”?
