With a Tear Instead of a Sneer

Senator Ali Dickbar al-Durbini took another crack at self-extrication from the hornet's nest he walloped with a baseball bat a week ago.

Still didn't work.

Under fire from Republicans and some fellow Democrats, Senator Dick Durbin apologized Tuesday for comparing American interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Nazis and other historically infamous figures.

"Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line," the Illinois Democrat said. "To them I extend my heartfelt apologies."
Stop the tape. "Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line" - obviously Durbin still doesn't believe that to be the case. Which means he isn't really repentant at all. So what he's really saying to his critics is, "Okay, I said 'I'm sorry,' now get off my [bleep]ing back!"

You know another way you can tell that this was "Durbin pretend apology, take 2"? He blatantly ripped off George Voinovich:

His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks.

"They're the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them," he said.

Yeah, Durbin is "No. 2," alright. And his so-called apology to the troops is just as weasly qualified as the one prooffered to his non-active duty military critics. Indeed, it's difficult for me to envision a soldier this side of the stockade who wouldn't feel insulted by his remarks - and I'm referring to this "No. 2"-y apology.

I can, however, halfway buy that last sentence. He probably didn't intend to dis the troops at Gitmo primarily - that dishonor was obviously aimed at the President. He doubtless looks upon American servicepeople like a sort of "Mom & apple pie" Waffen-SS, easily brainwashed rednecks with a weakness for crewcuts and heavy ordnance who got duped into committing unspeakable atrocities he can't prove by being told it was part of "playing GI Joe."

Nah, that last line doesn't work - I used to watch GI Joe, and they were always stupid enough to let COBRA escape at the end of each episode by exercising mercy and fair play.

Kind of like we're actually doing at Gitmo.

Damn it.

I guess Senator al-Durbini was too busy watching Transformers instead. Or maybe that was his Donk colleagues, who rushed as one to his side and declared the firestorm summarily concluded, as Matt May reports (via Captain's Quarters):

As Senator Durbin slithered away to make the introductory remarks at a fundraising dinner with Howard Dean...

I wonder if he realizes just how scrutinized those remarks will be? Maybe he'll utter them during Howie's screams.

...Senators immediately took to the floor to do what they do best - pat their colleague on the back for his "courage" and the "heartfelt" way in which he apologized. Senator McCain finally surfaced to accept his apology and joined Senator Lieberman in pronouncing the matter closed. Senator Obama rushed to defend and commend his fellow Illinoisan. Everyone lamented the fact that folks in the public eye all regret things that they have said in the past. That Senator McCain called Senator Durbin's speech today "courageous" shows he either had the sense beaten out of him during his own military incarceration or that he always has one eye on 2008. Perhaps both. Regardless, Senator McCain does not have the authority or the standing to close the matter.
No, Senators, the matter is not closed, because al-Durbini has not truly apologized. When he does so without qualification, and admits that what he said was not just dishonest and flagrantly wrong, but seditious as well, and relinquishes both his leadership slot and Senate seat and humbly accepts the disgrace he has richly earned, only then will it be over.

And, of course, they know that perfectly well, just as we know that al-Durbini will never comply. What they mean is that the Extreme Media has its cue to "move on" and relegate the ongoing firestorm to the space between the tide schedules and lingerie ads on page Z-97.

But in the big picture it doesn't matter, because there will always be another such act of sedition, whether by Durbin or Charlie Rangel or Howie Dean or Hillary Clinton or John Kerry or Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi, etc., etc., etc. This is who these people are, and they're on their own version of the Crusades, and George W. Bush and any who work for or support him are the infidels. They are political bulemics. They "barf" like they breathe.

Which is what makes Mr. May's perorating Abraham Lincoln quote so appropriate:

"Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged."

Do we even have that much rope?
