Why Harriet Miers Is In Big Trouble

Listen to this summation of the challenge President Bush's SCOTUS nominee faces in winning Senate confirmation:

To win, Bush needs to hold on to mainstream Republicans [i.e. RINOs, of which there are maybe nine or ten] without losing too many social conservatives [i.e. the other forty-five or so] - while hopefully picking up the support of some Democrats. [emphases added]

I said yesterday that Harriet Miers was a nominee with no natural constituency. The above rhetorical pretzel is a devastating illustration of it, and the uphill climb it foreshadows.
