With Friends Like These...

Our good friend Arlen Specter is at it again:

A powerful Republican committee chairman who has led the fight against President Bush's signing statements said Monday he would have a bill ready by the end of the week allowing Congress to sue him in federal court.

"We will submit legislation to the United States Senate which will...authorize the Congress to undertake judicial review of those signing statements with the view to having the President's acts declared unconstitutional," Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-PA, said on the Senate floor.

Yeah, this is really a priority right now, Sphincter. Just what the President needs in this time of war, a petty distraction from his own party.

I really can't stand that man.

JASmius adds: Every president has indulged in signing statements. They're the Executive Branch equivalent of non-binding congressional resolutions, showing the President's perceptions and state of mind when he signed a given piece of legislation. They're not a blanket declaration of presidential defiance of the high & mighty Legislative Branch.

Snarlin' Arlen is just PO'd at his own unconstitutional power grab over the NSA terrorist surveillance program getting slapped down. Looks like he'd better get used to that sort of thing.
