The Company You Keep
Great commentary by Doug Patton over at GOP USA regarding Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize nomination. The most interesting thing to me is this:
According to the rules of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the organization's "peace prize" is given each year to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
To state the obvious, what the heck does Gore's pseudoscience on video have to do with fraternity among nations or the abolition of standing armies, blah blah blah? This prize has been a joke for a long time...past winners include Yasser Arafat, Kofi Annan, and Jimmy Carter, for heaven's sake. There have been some bright spots such as Mother Teresa and MLK, but for the most part it's a political tool, nothing more and nothing less.
Of course, Rush Limbaugh has been nominated also, by the Landmark Legal Foundation. Anybody think he has a ghost of a chance? You can read a roundup of the brouhaha this has caused at his web site. I doubt if he even wants it, considering the company he'd be in.
