All About Fred

Well, not ALL, not yet, anyway. But two items in this blurb about a speech ex-Senator Thompson is giving today in close proximity to last night's GOP presidential rugby scrum caught my eye, and are not encouraging dispatches for a Thompson candidacy:

Thompson announced last month that he is in remission from lymphoma, a type of blood cell cancer. He said the cancer was discovered 2 1/2 years ago and can be treated with drug therapy if it returns.

Despite his voting record, Thompson does not have a well-articulated ideology, the Times said. His most obvious qualifications may be that he looks the part of a president, which he will play in a forthcoming HBO movie.

The latter are the press long knives that are out already, a foretaste of things to come should Thompson go ahead and take the plunge. An instant replay of what they tried to do to Ronald Reagan. Would the strategy work on Fred Thompson?

But the cancer and outer veneer of conservatism without the "well-articulated" foundation underneath - which is quite UNlike the Gipper - could be serious stumbling blocks, raising legitimate concerns about a runaway Thompson bandwagon. At the very least, they suggest that his current coy reticence about declaring is more than just clever and/or cunning strategizing. He's got weaknesses that need protecting and that may not survive anything more than a short, all-out run beginning after Labor Day.

If Mitt Romney's rise continues, Thompson may be forced to fish or cut bait sooner than he planned. Otherwise the runaway bandwagon may have Utah license plates instead.
