One Day At The Front

The nature of the news of which depends on which front you're on, on which day. On the one hand, three U.S. soldiers have been captured by al Qaeda in Iraq; on the other hand, in Afghanistan, Mullah Dadullah, the Taliban's top military commander, has been sent home to Allah with seventy-two virgins who all look like Martha Rae, denture-wearer. The latter is by a far a bigger strategic victory than the former is a tactical defeat, but it probably won't be reported that way.

You have to love Brother Hinderaker's lament:

There is something disorienting about following a war that half of our people don't believe we're fighting.

And that the other half don't think we should be.
