A 180 On Illegal Immigration?
Goodness, where did THIS come from?
But, but, Mr. Secretary, won't that alienate Hispanic voters? Isn't that nativist? Isn't that racist? Whose country do you think this is, anyway, Americans'? Besides, who's going to pick all that lettuce?
Sounds like Judge Chertoff has gone off the reservation and into business for himself. Either that or the President is so determined to inflict Harriet Miers on the federal judiciary that he's willing to heave his pet panderees overboard to try and mend fences with the base in whose faces he's been pissing for the past two weeks.
At least until she is rejected by the Senate and he can substitute Alberto "Speedy" Gonzales instead, who said in a speech to a Hispanic group just today....okay, I can't find the link, but he said that a Hispanic Justice was "inevitable," which is probably true though putting it that way sounds more than a little off-putting, and can easily be construed as referring to himself.
I wonder how either Miers or Gonzales would rule on the constitutionality of Chertoff's proposal.
I also so do not want to find that out.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department aims without exception to expel all those who enter the United States illegally.
"Our goal at DHS (Homeland Security) is to completely eliminate the 'catch and release' enforcement problem, and return every single illegal entrant, no exceptions.
It should be possible to achieve significant and measurable progress to this end in less than a year," Chertoff told a Senate hearing.
