Da Vinci Duh

I just wanted to address the hoopla over The Da Vinci Code. I'm a conservative, evangelical Christian and of course I know the story is bogus. It's one thing to inform people about the errors, I'm all for that. But I've seen stories of Christians demanding that the movie begin with a disclaimer about it being fiction. C'mon. This is Hollywood. Nothing positive about Christianity is going to come out of Hollywood, unless somebody like Mel Gibson bankrolls it himself. Give Christians a little credit..we already know the truth, and are not going to be fooled by a Tom Hanks movie. The unchurched will be blown about by every wind of doctrine, no matter where it comes from. Perhaps we as Christians should be about reaching them rather than stirring up their curiosity about movies like this by our overzealous actions. Again, I have no problem with objecting to the abhorrent crap contained in The Da Vinci Code, and attempting to educate people about the truth. But I also don't want to make it even more of a blockbuster than it's already going to be...the negative reviews so far notwithstanding. I fear we are going to do for this movie what we did for The Last Temptation of Christ.

JASmius adds: The difference between Da Vinci and Last Temptation is that the former puts itself over as a scholarly quasi-documentary; kind of a Last Temptation with footnotes. That's why so many evangelicals want the disclaimer included.

My take is that Da Vinci is just Hollywood's revenge for The Passion of the Christ. Can't let even a semi-accurate depiction of the Son of God go unblasphemed, after all.

Now the world waits breathlessly for The Saladin Code. Somehow, though, I doubt that Mohammed will take such a broadside hit. Which only shows that that flick will be as dishonest as Da Vinci.

UPDATE: Here's a review of Da Vinci that, while not exactly an exercise in Christian apologetics, is most statisfying nonetheless. [h/t Polipundit]
