Standards, Double

Time for another study in contrasts.

First, this:

[Senate Minority Leader] Harry Reid went on offense yesterday ... of a sort. Claiming that his failure to properly disclose his partnership with Jay Brown - an attorney with ties to a zoning-commission bribery case and reported links to organized crime - amounted to "a Republican plot to make him look dishonest", Reid filed amended disclosures five years after the fact to note the transfer of his properties into his and Brown's LLCs. His big offensive ground to a halt, though, when he revealed two other land transactions that had never been disclosed, and another mini-scandal erupted involving his use of campaign funds. [emphases added]

Versus this:

If the FBI finds evidence of [GOP Representative Curt] Weldon using his office to shovel taxpayer money into Itera's pockets and to benefit his daughter at the expense of the American taxpayer, then he should be prosecuted, and I'll cheer the jury that convicts him - but we're not even close to that with the information in this story. The lack of any grant or contract for Itera seems to indicate that Weldon didn't do any such thing. If that had happened, it would have been while Itera still employed Sexton and his daughter as lobbyists, between 2002-4. With the evidence presented by the [Washington] Post, this looks like a hit job by an organization [CREW] that seems intent on building a reputation for them. [emphases added]

Weldon, like Reid, insists that his investigation is politically motivated. Unlike Reid, Weldon has a point, and a damn-near irrefutable one.

And just think - this is the Bush Justice Department screwing over a Republican congressman three weeks before an election in which control of the House of Representatives hangs in the balance. Why no FBI raids of Dirty Harry or his sons or "associates"? The allegations against Weldon aren't any fresher than Reid's malfeasances.

It's getting to where Republicans would almost be prudent to start using their control of the government to their own partisan advantage simply in self-defense against the all-out left-wing insurrection being waged against them. If they don't while they still have the chance and let these neoBolsheviks get into power and begin their long-pent-up reign of terror, 'tis highly unlikely any more chances will be forthcoming any time soon.
