More Blacked-Out Good Economic News

Jobless Claims Decline Sharply

"The number of new applications filed last week for unemployment benefits fell sharply, offering a hopeful sign that the recovery in the job market may be gaining some steam.

"The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of new people signing up for unemployment insurance benefits dropped by a seasonally adjusted 37,000 to 335,000, the lowest level since the beginning of September."

Another 100,000 jobs

"Companies added 96,000 jobs to their payrolls in September, fewer than economists forecast for the last employment report before Election Day, highlighting a modest pace of hiring that has become an issue in President Bush's bid for re-election.

"The four hurricanes striking Florida and other coastal states the past two months 'appears to have held down employment growth, but not enough to change materially,' the Labor Department said Friday in assessing September's national employment."

Here is a "fair and balanced" overview of the macroeconomy over the balance of the first Bush term:

"The U.S. economy has displayed a remarkable resilience following the bursting of the Internet bubble and the 9/11 terrorist attacks that struck at the heart of American business. The economy’s strength was such that the 2001 recession is among the weakest on record. Today, business investment continues on an unprecedented expansion and more Americans are working than ever before. Still, myths are rampant. This paper presents a basic statistical overview of the American economy and prosperity that Americans today enjoy."

I notice Kerry couldn't lay a glove on the President vis-a-vie the economy in last Friday's debate, despite Big Media's attempt to negatively spin the aforementioned job creation number. Looks like Jim Glassman was right.
